About the cherry-throated tanager:

Scientific name: Nemosia rourei
Classification: passerine bird
Species from Brazilian fauna: yes.

The cherry-throated tanager, so known due to the characteristic red patch near its throat and upper center of the chest, contrasting with the white of the rest of the chest and belly, is a very rare bird found only in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest biome.

With highly degraded habitat, its estimated population is extremely low and it has been classified as a critically endangered species.

About the maned wolf:

Scientific name: Chrysocyon brachyurus
Classification: canid mammal
Species from Brazilian fauna: yes.

Chrysocyon brachyurus, a typical Cerrado (tropical savanna ecoregion of Brazil) mammal, is the largest canid in South America. It has a slender and elegant build, reddish coloration (Tupi: guará = red) with patterns similar to those of foxes, long and thin legs and large ears.

It is an omnivorous animal, feeding on fruits, mainly wolf apples, as well as small vertebrates, such as rodents, lizards and birds.

It is present in other South American countries, but most of its population lives in Brazil.

The species is threatened by the degradation of its habitat and other human activities, such as hunting and roadkill.

Classification: xenarthran mammal

The giant anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), the largest of the anteaters, can be found in Central and South America and is easily recognized by its elongated snout and distinctive coat, especially its large bushy tail.

It feeds mainly on ants and termites, using its front claws to excavate anthills and termite mounds and its long tongue to collect the insects.

The species is threatened by the degradation of its habitat and by hunting, in addition to being a victim of fires and roadkill.
